Overview

Gill's Seafood & Chicken, nestled in the heart of Port Augusta, South Australia, is a true beacon for lovers of fresh, vibrant seafood and classic fish and chips. This unpretentious takeaway spot, located on Hunter Crescent, embodies the spirit of a coastal town with its no-frills, hearty offerings and welcoming atmosphere.

The highlight at Gill’s is undoubtedly their fresh seafood. Whether you’re savoring crisp Schnapper cutlets, King George fillets, or the smoky richness of their smoked fish, each bite speaks of freshness sourced from nearby waters. The menu extends beyond fish, offering a well-rounded selection including crays, garfish fillets, and, notably, seasonal boiled crabs that captivate locals and visitors alike during the prime season. For those who prefer poultry, the rotisserie chicken is a standout, cooked to tender perfection and full of flavor.

Gill’s doesn't just cater to seafood aficionados. Their hamburgers, notably the Tropical and classic Fish Burger, provide a satisfying alternative that holds its own with generous portions and fresh ingredients. Snacks such as Chiko rolls, spring rolls, and Pluto pups complement the core menu, adding variety for a casual meal or quick bite.

The experience at Gill’s is enriched by its genuine, down-to-earth owners whose warmth resonates with every visitor. Locals regularly flock here, creating a lively, friendly atmosphere that feels like a community gathering place rather than merely a takeaway shop. Stories shared by the staff about shark or whale sightings imbue the visit with a sense of connection to the surrounding waters and fishing heritage.

The shop itself reflects simplicity and authenticity—no glitter, just honest food prepared swiftly and with care. This unassuming space fits perfectly with the rustic seaside town vibe and appeals to travelers seeking a true taste of Port Augusta’s coastal culture as well as locals craving the comfort of familiar, fresh food.

Value is evident not only in the quality but in the generous servings that satisfy substantial appetites, making Gill’s Seafood & Chicken a memorable stop. Whether you’re passing through or making it a destination, this spot delivers delicious, wholesome meals that linger long after the last chip is eaten.

Delicious fish and chips. Very busy shop with most of the customers being locals. What a warm and friendly community you have there. We were passing through the town and found good reviews of this place on the net. Absolutely worthy of the good ratings.

What a gem of a spot. Super good food and really good value, owners are so kind. Hamburger with the lot spot on, grilled snapper beautiful. Smoked king fish! Wish I bought more of that. And rotisserie chicken really good also

Fish and chicken served are 100% fresh and healthy. Very interesting spread of options available. During the crab seasons (end Oct-mid Nov onwards) you will get fresh boiled crabs (frozen) and they are so so fresh and right-priced. Service is always with smile with interesting stories of shark siting or whale siting nearby - host had been in serious fishing for many years and have real life experiences to share. You will not even know how fast the food you ordered is getting ready. Simple, rustic sea food shop with no glamour or glitter. Don’t miss the real shark fin kept on the show case.

Wow ... what an experience. We found it wandering around with Google. Without Google, you would never find the shop. It was to open at 5:30, but opened at 5:00 pm. People came from everywhere when the door opened. It's a classic local fish shop that the 'in the know' people seem to use. We ordered four different fresh fish with the idea of sharing. My wife loved it, which is a high-level test. It appears ordinary on first sighting, but it is lovely in all respects. The owners certainly love being there. They are people, people. (The shark has lots of teeth).

We were travelling through Port Augusta and visited Gill's shop. Gill and his staff were super friendly and very welcoming. Definitely loved and respected by the locals, as they have been there for over 30 years. The food was very nice and fresh. Gill certainly looked after us. Would highly recommend this little take away shop, if you want great old fashioned customer service.
